Sheriff's police responding to reports of shots fired in unincorporated Kendall County found that weapons were being discharged legally — but at one of the gun owners did not have a valid Firearm Owners ID card.

Travis Froelich, 21, of the 1800 block of Beckwith Court, Plainfield, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition without a valid FOID card and taken to the Kendall County jail, police said.

Deputy Bryan Harl said police responded to the report of shots fired in area of Caton Farm and Ridge Road and about 6:10 p.m. Tuesday. Police found that the discharge of firearms was being done legally at a home in the 10000 block of Ridge Road.

He said it's not illegal to fire a weapon in areas outside of the village or city limits as long as it's done with a valid FOID card. He said people occasionally use the area to do target shooting.

"As long as it's done safely, people who live outside of the city limits are allowed to fire guns out there," he said.
