No one Injured in Tuesday Morning House Fire

Naperville firefighters responded this morning to a fire on Bayberry Lane.

A two-story home in the 500 block of Bayberry Lane in was deemed unlivable Tuesday morning after a fire started in a second floor bathroom.

"There was smoke and fire coming from the rear of the house near the roof," said Division Chief Mark Ziemnick, who navigated around shattered glass that lay in the home's driveway. "Crews made a fast attack in the attic and were able to extinguish the fire fairly quickly."

Flames at the home, 512 Bayberry Lane, were under control within about 15 minutes, according to a fire department news release. The call for the incident came in at 10:52 a.m.

"The fire originated in the upstairs bathroom when a worker who was using a propane torch to loosen floor tile accidentally started the fire," stated a news release sent Tuesday afternoon. "The fire got into the plumbing chase in the wall and extended up into the attic causing considerable damage to two second floor bathrooms and the attic."

Firefighters broke the glass on second-story windows and made slices in the roof to increase ventilation and visibility for crew members. No one was in the home when crews arrived and no firefighters were injured, Ziemnick said.

Onlookers, who asked to not be named, stood watching from a sidewalk across the street. One said she noticed smoke billowing from the home while walking her dog just before emergency crews arrived.

Rain poured on first responders as they began the clean-up effort, collapsing ladders and detaching hose lines. The fire inspector was on his way around 11:35 a.m. to determine the cause of the blaze. Ziemnick did note that he didn't think lightning was to blame.

"Damages were confined to the second floor bedroom and bathroom, as well as part of the kitchen area downstairs," Ziemnick said.

Damage to the home is estimated to be $200,000.00, said the release. Building Inspectors from Naperville’s Transportation, Engineering and Development Business Group classified the home as uninhabitable. It was secured by a board-up service.
