No Injuries in Thursday Night Roof Fire

Blaze at Walgreens store construction site brought under control in less than 10 minutes.

Fire officials said it is believed that construction workers using an open flame earlier in the day Thursday caused a roof fire at a Walgreens store that is under construction.

Fire crews responded at about 8:51 p.m. to a fire at the store at 1303 Wehrli Road. Crews arrived within about five minutes of receiving the 911 call.

“Crews threw a ladder to the roof and ascended it carrying assorted tools and a fire hose,” said Naperville Fire Department Deputy Chief Rick Sander in a news release. “Once on the roof, they began extinguishing the fire.”

An initial crew of 24 was dispatched to the fire and additional crews helped with removal of roof decking and checking to ensure the fire did not spread, Sander said. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes. No one was injured.

Damage to the building is estimated at less than $5,000, according to the news release.
