Naperville Police Investigating Fatal Shooting Involving Officers

Officers shot and killed an Aurora man who threatened them with a knife, according to the Naperville Police Department.

Police said they are investigating a Tuesday morning incident in which Naperville officers shot and killed an Aurora man after he approached them with a knife, which he refused to drop.

William C. Ladew, 47, of the 500 block of Lake Street in Aurora, was shot by officers early Tuesday and transported to Edward Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

After receiving a 911 call about a suicidal person, an on-duty uniformed officer and a sergeant responded to a second-floor apartment at 1135 W. Ogden Ave. in Naperville, according to reports.

“The subject’s female friend allowed the officers into the apartment and the subject advanced from a back bedroom toward the officers, with a large knife, in a threatening manner,” according to the news release. “Officers ordered the subject to drop the knife and he refused. In fear for their lives, the officers shot the subject. Immediately thereafter first aid was rendered to the subject.”

Personnel from the Naperville Fire Department responded and transported Ladew to , according to the release. There were no other injuries.

The police sergeant involved is a 19-year veteran of the department and the officer is a 10-year veteran of the department, according to the release. The sergeant and the officer have been placed on administrative leave based on department policy.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney Office was notified of the incident, and the DuPage County State’s Attorney Office Investigations Division is coordinating and assisting the investigation.
