A lightning strike appears to have caused an attic fire in a home in the 1100 block of Bards Avenue on Monday morning, according to the . Residents evacuated the home safely.
At 8:20 a.m., a resident called 911 saying that there was smoke in her home, according to a news release from the Naperville Fire Department Division Fire Chief, Mark Ziemnik. The department dispatched seven fire apparatus and 16 personnel to the fire.
Fire crews found light smoke in a second floor attic space of the single-family home and began fire suppression efforts in the attic, Ziemnik said in the news release. Additional firefighters assisted with ventilation and fire suppression in the back of the home.
“Based on witness accounts, the area of origin and fire conditions found on arrival, the fire department finds the cause of the fire to be consistent with that of a lightning strike,” Ziemnik said in the news release.
Crews had the fire under control within 20 minutes of arriving. A second-story bedroom received smoke and water damage, and the attic was moderately damaged, Ziemnik said.
Damage to the home was estimated to be about $40,000. Inspectors said that the home was habitable, according to Ziemnik.
