A suspect in Tuesday night's South Joliet Street murder led police on a lengthy chase and was shot when he pulled a gun on an officer, an official said.

The unidentified man was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center but was airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital due to the seriousness of his wound, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Officers spotted the man, who had been named as a suspect in the slaying of 25-year-old Markus Tanzy, about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, the source said. The night before, police found Tanzy sitting on a the porch of a house on South Joliet Street with a bullet wound to his chest. Tanzy was pronounced dead soon after at Presence St. Joseph.

The man eluded police during a lengthy car chase that ended when he crashed near South Chicago Street and Mills Road, the source said. The man then took off on foot.

When officers cornered the man he pulled a gun, the source said. At least one officer opened fire and hit the man at least once, getting him in the hip, the source said.

No officers were injured in the chase or shooting, the source said.

Police said Wednesday morning they had developed no suspects and had no witnesses to Tanzy's slaying.
