Icy Roadways, Crashes Aplenty

Naperville police have been responding to accident calls a little more often this week because of nasty weather.

have been working steadily since Monday evening to finish up the accident reports from crashes that occurred during this week's inclement weather.

The string of crashes began Monday night, when icy roads were to blame for 34 local wrecks.

"That total includes everything from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday," said Naperville Police Cmndr. Dave Hoffman, during phone interview.

Those crashes included a single-car rollover accident at West Diehl Road and Ketten Drive, in which the vehicle wound up in retention pond; as well as a two-vehicle, serious fender-bender near 95th Street and Route 59. During the latter accident, one person was transported to the hospital.

"We were very fortunate that it was actually the only injury — and it seems it was a relatively minor one — out of all the accidents we had that night," Hoffman said.

Without adverse weather conditions, he said the department usually has one or two accidents each evening.

Roadways on Wednesday night were similar to those on Monday. Sleet led to icy-covered thoroughfares and as of midnight, police said they had not yet tallied the number of accidents.
