Man Shot During Fight with Neighbors: Plainfield Police [UPDATE]

Man who was shot in the leg "a wanted fugitive," now in police custody, officials said.

Updated at 4:45 p.m. July 14:

Numerous people are in custody after a male was shot in the leg during a dispute at a townhome in the 20000 block of George Washington Drive in Plainfield's Patriot Square subdivision, police said Monday.

Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said the incident occurred at about 10:45 a.m. after a dispute between tenants in two units in the townhome. Residents of the area reported seeing crime scene tape and emergency vehicles surrounding a home near Presidential Avenue and Patriot Boulevard following the incident.

"There was some type of physical altercation," before a gun was introduced into the dispute, Konopek said.

He said the male was taken to Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. According to Konopek, the same male had called police earlier in the morning wanting to turn himself in on a warrant for battery.

In a press release issued Monday afternoon, police said they were called to the area of George Washington Drive "in reference to a wanted fugitive who had also been shot." The man who was shot told police that he had been involved in a fight with his neighbors, and he was shot during the altercation, police said.

"The officers immediately set up a perimeter surrounding the area, located and took into custody five individuals involved in the shooting/altercation," police said.

Konopek said five people — some adults, some juveniles — were detained following the shooting.

Konopek said police are confident everyone involved in the incident has been detained, and there is no threat to the public.

In a press release, Sgt. Mike Fisher said the area around the home was cordoned off for about three hours following the shooting and that "the situation was handled securely and resulted in the quick apprehension of all those involved without further incident."

The man who was shot was treated for his injuries at Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora before being released back into police custody, police said. According to Fisher, he remains in custody in connection with the Monday morning altercation, as well as active arrest warrants.

Konopek said police are familiar with the individuals involved in the altercation, but did not have specifics on prior incidents at the townhome.

As of late Monday afternoon, no information had been released on the alleged offenders and victims, and police said the investigation into the incident is continuing.
