Fire Officials: Contractors Caused Roof Fire

A small roof fire broke out Friday morning at the site of DeVry University's Naperville location.

Firefighters were called to a fire on the roof of a five-story office building, the site of DeVry University's Naperville location, at 2056 Westings Ave. Friday morning.

No one was injured and the building was evacuated, said Division Chief Mark Ziemnik. The Naperville Fire Investigation Team was able to determine contractors working on the building’s roof caused the fire.

The contractors were working on the roof when the fire started, Ziemnik said.

The first firefighters on the scene arrived at 7:22 a.m. and learned from building management contractors were working on the roof.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, though crews stayed at the site for an hour working on the roof and working to prevent water damage to the building’s fifth floor. Ziemnik said the fire was relatively small. Estimated damage was $50,000.
