Detective Accused of Pocketing Police Union Cash

Naperville man now suspended from Aurora Police Department.

Kane County prosecutors have accused an Aurora Police Department detective of stealing from the police union.

Joseph Accardi, 36, of Naperville, is charged with one misdemeanor count of theft. The nine-year detective "took less than $500 from the Association of Professional Police Officers, which represents Aurora police officers, in May 2013," prosecutors said Thursday.

Accardi is free on bail, reports Sun-Times Media.

"Charging documents allege Accardi, who surrendered to authorities on Wednesday and was released, has been on administrative leave from the department since September," the news agency reported.

Accardi joined the department in 1999. He was reassigned to patrol in early 2013, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli told reporters earlier this year, and then went on leave.

Accardi's leave was raised as an issue in at least one criminal trial, a murder case, earlier this year, the Aurora Beacon-News reported in January.
