The identity of a person found dead in an abandoned building near downtown Joliet is being withheld pending positive identification, the Will County Coroner's office said Thursday night.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said a call came in at around 2:30 p.m. about a possible dead body in a vacant building at 211 N. Joliet St. Benton said the body "appeared to be there for an extended period of time," but said it was unclear exactly how long, or how long the building has been vacant.

According to the coroner's office, the body was in an "advanced state of decomposition."

At this point, "there was no obvious indication of foul play," Benton said, but that it will be up to the coroner to make that determination.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, Benton said.
