Firefighters Extinguish Blaze Tonight at Naperville Central

Firefighters responded around 5 p.m. to an activated fire alarm at Naperville Central High School.

More than two dozen firefighters showed up to help extinguish flames at early Monday evening, when responders were greeted by smoke that was billowing down a vacant hallway.

The Naperville Public Safety Answering Point received an activated fire alarm notification from the school at 4:54 p.m., according to a news release sent by the .

"A general alarm assignment of two engines, two medic units, three trucks, one squad and four support vehicles was immediately dispatched to the scene for the reported activation," stated the release.

The smoky hallway led responders to a home economics classroom on the south side of the building.

"An activated sprinkler head extinguished a fire in a clothes dryer located in the classroom," stated the release. "Firefighters advanced hose lines and connected into the sprinkler system. Fire only damaged the dryer."

However, smoke and water damage afflicted two classrooms and an adjoining hallway. Students had evacuated the immediate area when the fire alarm sounded, firefighters said. They were directed to stay in the main gym. No one was injured in the blaze.

The exact cause of the fire remained under investigation around 6:45 p.m. Monday by Naperville’s fire investigation team. The preliminary estimate of fire, smoke and water damage to the school was in excess of $100,000, according to the release.
