Berwyn Man Charged in Naperville Jewelry Theft

Naperville police arrested a Berwyn man last week in connection with an October car burglary.

Naperville police said they arrested a Berwyn man last week who they believe is the jewel thief responsible for a late October burglary from a traveling salesman.

Harold Guzman, 51, was taken into custody Tuesday, Feb. 8, in connection with the incident, which occurred on Oct. 28, 2010, according to a news release sent by the . The theft took place in a local hotel parking lot located near the intersection of Route 59 and Diehl Road.

"The victim, a traveling jewelry salesman, reported his locked vehicle was burglarized overnight," stated the release. "An extensive jewelry collection with an estimated retail value of $600,000 was stolen from the trunk of the vehicle."

Guzman was arrested following an extensive investigation, police said, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Oak Park and Berwyn police departments. Investigators determined the victim was targeted specifically because of the amount of jewelry he traveled with, police said.

Guzman, of the 2300 block of Clinton Avenue in Berwyn, was charged with burglary to a motor vehicle and felony theft. He is currently being held in the DuPage County Jail on $150,000 bail, according to inmate records.

A hold on his custody was placed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and he will transferred to that agency from the local jail. He will not be eligible for bond, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office website.
