Élan Dance Company to Perform with Dance >Detour Oct. 4 at Lubeznik Center for the Arts

Naperville Park District’s Élan Dance Company will perform original dances and co-lead a workshop with Dance>Detour, a Chicago mixed-abilities ensemble, at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana. Élan Dance Company is a program of the Naperville Park District and is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Élan’s mission is to be a creative, accessible, and inclusive pre-professional dance company, offering young dancers an entry point into the world of dance performance. Dance>Detour was founded in 1995 in Chicago as a professional “diverse-abilities” dance company comprised of multi-talented artists with and without disabilities. Dance Detour’s assistant director Melissa Sallée also serves as a choreographer and teacher for the Naperville Park District’s Dance Academy (including Élan Dance Company). Sallée brings her holistic approach to teaching and choreography to both organizations. “Élan’s performance and workshop with Dance>Detour will celebrate both National Disabilities Awareness Month and National Arts and Humanities Month,” said Sallée. “Following our opening performances, the two companies will co-lead a live, “behind the scenes” workshop demonstrating how we integrate mixed-abilities movement. We will invite the audience to consider the endless possibilities of integrated movement in the arts.” As part of their opening performance at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, Élan Dance Company will debut an original dance in honor of Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The Company will perform this dance again later in the month at Mokena Park District’s Oct. 20 event, Halloween Hallow,” and then in Naperville at the SCARE-illon concert at the Millennium Carillon on Oct. 26. Additional Halloween dances will include “Ghost Town,” “Scream,” “Double Trouble” and “Wizards in Training.” For more information about the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, visit http://www.lubeznikcenter.org/Special_Events/events.html.
