Bear Down: Bayou Beatdown

Bears take a punch in the mouth against the Saints

Not to brag or anything but I consider myself to be strong to quite strong at impressions (I've got a mean Sean Connery).  So here's one I've been working on since last night.  This is Victor Ortiz watching Jay Cutler and the Bears on Sunday.

"Now THAT man is having a rough weekend".

Pretty good, huh?

The Bears and Jay Cutler simply got beat up against the Saints on Sunday.  No other way to put it.  The offensive line brought a knife to a gun fight against Gregg Williams and the Saint's defense and nearly got their season (Jay Cutler) killed.  Jay was constantly on his back or running for his life while the Saint's players were attacking him from every angle possible.  With the O-line playing that way, the guy from Big Bang Theory has a better chance winning an emmy than the Bears winning that game Sunday (Wait. He won? Really?! Over Steve Carell??!!  Seriously, who's watching that show??).  On the other side of the ball, Drew Brees showed his greatness and picked apart the Bear's defense with poise and precision.  The Bear's front four supplied next to nothing in terms of QB pressure and like I said last week, when that happens, this defense doesn't work and the Bears lose.  Add on top of all that, you're at the toughest place to play in the NFL and you have yourself a recipe for disaster.  Bears 13, Saints 30

Keys To The Game:

*The O-line was miserable.  Jay was sacked six times and hit on 10 other drop backs (Brees was sacked once and hit two other times).  The second half was extra bad as Jay was just trying to survive the game as Saints players came at him from everywhere (the Saint's D-coordinator, Gregg Williams, called a hell of a game).  And for the people who call Jay Cutler soft or not tough or not like his face on the sideline, just do us all a favor and stop watching football.  You lose all credibility when you say these things.  This guy is beat up more then any other quarterback in the NFL on and off the field and all he does is stand up, brush himself off and move on.  In my eyes, he's one of, if not THE toughest guy in the NFL.  Sorry to get all high horse on you, but that stuff really gets to me.

*Oh yeah.  The Bear's right tackle, Gabe Carimi, is out for at least two weeks with a dislocated right knee.  Omiyale time!  Sweet

*The WR's played just as bad as the line did.  It's tough to tell from watching on TV how the WR's are doing at getting open but you could tell Jay's first option was constantly being taken away and he was having to check down (10 Forte catches).  The receivers were being out muscled and jammed at the line or knocked off their routes all day.  But that is to be expected when you look at the size of our WR's.  They're built like the cast of Big Bang Theory (Ok seriously, name one person you know who watches that show.  I challenge you)

*Mike Martz is a mad man and needs to be protected from himself.  From the quotes by Lovie on Monday morning I bet he'll do just that.  The Bear's threw the ball 45 times to 12 runs...12!  Martz was calling the same kind of games last year until Jay almost died in New York against the Giants.  Lovie stepped in and demanded a more balanced offense and the Bears took off.  Look for Lovie to step in again and force Martz to run the ball more.

*Jay isn't excused from all the fault.  The happy feet were in full effect and he was indecisive and inaccurate the few dropbacks he had time to throw.  We get good Jay and bad Jay.  Sunday was bad Jay.

*My in depth breakdown of how the defense played can be wrapped up in one word...blah.  They weren't atrocious by any means but they certainly weren't good.  They were just, blah.  As I've said before, this defense needs a front four push and force turnovers.  It did neither on Sunday (one fumble recovery).  This team is just not built to win without solid defensive play.

*Play Of The Game:  Brees to Henderson for a 79 yard touchdown.  I didn't like the Chris Harris injury going into this game and it proved to be costly.  As soon as Henderson (the fastest guy on the field) lined up in the slot the Bears should have been all over it.  Someone has to knock him off his route and not let him get over top your safeties.  But that's exactly what Devery did as Major and Conte were a step behind him.  Brees threw a strike and the Bears were left diving at air.  Lovie's cover 2 is built to not let you over the top.  I'm sure film session this week will be fun.

*Player Of The Game:  Gregg Williams and the entire Saint's D.  Outclassed Martz and the Bear's O

At the end of the day, it's just one game.  The Saints are a heck of a team and multiple "experts" pick to win it all this year.  We all would have hoped for a better showing out of our boys but as Victor Ortiz can attest to, sometimes you just get punched in the mouth and you just have to take it.  The beauty of the NFL is week to week has little to no impact on the other and like the movie title, It's really any given Sunday (or Monday)(or Thursday)(or sometimes Saturday).  So the Bear's will move on and use the game to get better.  Besides, it's Packer week!  I'm not Jewish but I'd imagine Hanukkah to feel something like this.  So remember Bears fans, boycott all that is Wisconsin this week.  No eating cheese or kissing your cousin.

Oh shoot, I got to go!  Big Bang Theory is about to start!  1-1  Bearssssss
