Quality of Life in Nursing Homes

The attorneys at the Law Offices of Steven J. Malman & Associates, P.C., are committed to fighting nursing home abuse and neglect. When clients come forward to our firm with a case of abuse and neglect, we begin thorough investigations on a victim’s medical history and quality of life in a nursing home. By doing so, we bring attention to the very pitfalls of nursing homes that cause such abuse and neglect. Public cases can also serve as exposure to government authorities and community members who can push for stricter laws regarding nursing home staff and treatment.

What is Quality of Life?

Quality of life extends beyond the basic medical treatment of a resident, it includes promoting a healthy way of life including individualism, self-worth and every education concerning daily practices and treatments. It is part of what makes nursing home residents feel as if they are more than a number in nursing home. The following are example of Quality of Life treatments that your loved has the right to receive.

Grooming

Keeping a resident groomed to their liking promotes quality of life. Staff members can clip nails, trim beards and style hair. They can also promote residents to wear their own clothing and choose their outfits for the day.

Activities

Assisting residents to participate in activities of their own choosing whether it be gardening, reading, watching movies or playing games.

Privacy

Facility staff should always give a resident privacy when it is requested. For example, staff should allow for a resident to enjoy their company, speak on the phone, and bathe with privacy in mind.

Promoting Self-Esteem

Recognition of even the simplest accomplishments can promote self-worth in a resident.

Teaching Safe and Healthy Practices

Educating residents of safety throughout the facility and what to do in an emergency helps to make residents feel that they are in a safe and cared for environment. Staff should also educate residents of treatments, nutrition and diet and the importance of turning to prevent bed sores.

If you or a loved one feel that you were neglected of quality of life treatment that caused serious emotional or physical damages, you may be entitled to legal compensation.
