kourture’s  “12 Favorite Things of Christmas” ~ Day 5 Featuring Second Chance Resale Shop – Family Shelter Services of Westmont & Naperville ~ Sharing, Supporting and Promoting Small Businesses!!

kourture is excited to share one of our favorite places that supports a great cause, Second Hand Resale ShopFamily Shelter Services of Westmont & Naperville, for our 5th Favorite Things of Christmas!! The amazing thing about Second Chance stores is its mission to provide “help and hope” to victims of domestic violence in DuPage County.

kourture discovered Second Chance Resale years ago through my Mom, in Westmont, 1131 Fairview Ave – corner of 63rd and Fairview, and learned about Family Shelter Services and all the greatness they do!! Last year I discovered the Naperville location by chance and then worked with the Store Manager, Kath, in gathering winter clothing to support the shops and the cause!!

kourture absolutely loves Family Shelter Services mission “to transforms lives by offering help and hope to those affected by domestic violence”.  With their Second Chance Resale Shops they give everyone an opportunity to shop at their stores, save lots of money and shop while giving back to an amazing cause!! And, most importantly is their amazing staffs that make it all happen!! kourture absolutely loves the staff at both locations, as Kath oversees both locations!! But, I do favor my Debbie and Rachel at the Westmont location and always get excited when Kath is visiting!!

Some background history courtesy of Family Shelter Services: Founded in 1976 by a group of caring and concerned individuals who wanted to help the growing numbers of homeless people in DuPage County. These volunteers were members of an activist group, the Religious Education Community (REC), which studied social challenges in DuPage County. The group’s initial impressions led them to believe that “people living in their cars” had lost their homes through fire, eviction or similar crises. They were not expecting to deal with women and children who were homeless as a result of domestic violence. It quickly became apparent to some members of the REC that shelter for victims of domestic violence was a critical and overlooked issue. The first program that Family Shelter Service provided was a hotline operating 8 hours daily. Very shortly after that, a local church donated space and a telephone, and the hotline soon operated 24 hours a day. Read more…
