Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour is a global movement designed to celebrate a commitment to the planet by switching off non-essential lights for one designated hour. Ultimately, Earth Hour aims to encourage a global community to share the opportunities and challenges of cultivating a sustainable world. In 2012, Earth Hour took place in more than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories across the world and involved hundreds of millions of people switching their lights off for the hour. The city will be participating and encourages individuals and area organizations to participate.

“I was so pleased that the city of Naperville has supported Earth Hour in the past and am even more pleased that we are once again showing our support for action on conserving our precious resources,” Mayor A. George Pradel said in a release. “This is a symbolic event in which every single person can participate. Our city prides itself on being environmentally friendly, and this is one more way we can encourage our residents and businesses to care for our planet.”
