Hawthorne Credit Union’s Shred Day will be held on Saturday, March 5, 10 a.m. – Noon at their Naperville branch located at 1519 Naper Boulevard.  Shred Day is open to the public and each participant is welcome to bring up to 2 boxes of old paperwork and documents containing personal information. Below are documents that Hawthorne Credit Union officials suggest for shredding.

• Old credit card receipts – Check your receipts against the monthly statement to confirm everything is accurate, then shred all except those needed to verify product warranties.
• Cancelled checks – Same as credit card receipts.
• Old Credit card statements containing tax-related expenses should be kept for seven years.
• Old Tax records – You can shred them after seven years, since the IRS has six years to challenge your tax return.
• Old Paycheck stubs – Keep for one year to make sure they match your W-2, then shred them.
• Credit union or bank records – At the end of each year, go through your statements and only keep those related to taxes, business expenses, and housing or mortgage payments. Shred the rest.
• Documents with account passwords and PIN numbers, as well as those listing your maiden name, which is often used by credit card companies to confirm identity. Never throw them in the trash.
