In 1998, Laramie, WY, was rocked by the torture and murder of Matthew Shepard, a young man who was targeted by locals because he was gay. In the aftermath of the tragedy, members of Tectonic Theater Project conducted interviews with townspeople and nearby locals about their experiences and perspectives. The resulting documentary-style theatrical piece, The Laramie Project, became a widely produced piece of empathetic, activist theater in regional theaters, colleges and universities, and other venues throughout the world. The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later is a subsequent theatrical project. Ten years after Matthew Shepard's death, Tectonic returned to Laramie, re-interviewing previously interviewed individuals and adding additional interviews. The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later investigates the reverberations of tragedy and hate on a small town, echoes that are sometimes frightening and sometimes hopeful, all impacting the connections and tensions that make up our local, national, and human community.
