PRE-CIVIL WAR QUILTS: THEIR HIDDEN CODES TO THE FREEDOM OF SLAVES THROUGH THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD Dr. Clairice C. Boswell

Dr. Boswell will tell the historical story of quilts made by African-American slaves before the Civil War. She will display and discuss the significance of hidden codes in many of these quilts that enabled the fugitive slaves to follow a safe route to the Underground Railroad and eventually freedom. Dr. Clarice C. Boswel is a retired administrator and teacher from Joliet Township High School and the University of St. Francis in Joliet. Her latest book is titled Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom. Coffee and early seating will begin at 6:30 p.m. This program is presented in partnership with the Naperville Women’s Club.
