Non-Smoking Lung Cancer Awareness Day

The Chicago White Sox and the Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation are

teaming up for the inaugural Non-Smoking Lung Cancer

Awareness Day on September 17
at U. S. Cellular Field.

“We want to create greater awareness and get the word out to people that non-smoking related  lung cancer is a huge plague, and represents significant numbers in the cancer community,” said Dr. George McArdle, who heads up the foundation.

McArdle started The Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation, “Jannie’s Hope,” in honor of his wife, Jannie, a vibrant and active non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2008.

To date, the organization has raised more than $250,000 for lung cancer research.

“Lung cancer research is extraordinarily underfunded in relation to other cancer research because of the unfortunate connection that it has with smoking,” McArdle said. “With the little bit of money we have raised so far, some great things have emerged in terms of developing specific therapies for individual patients. We are seeing great progress and that progress can only be accelerated if we can raise more funds.”

McArdle said his wife was a “giant Sox fan,” and he is thrilled to pair with the organization on September 17. Net proceeds of ticket sales will go to fund lung cancer research at the University of Chicago Medicine.

Tickets must be purchased through Jannie’s Hope to have proceeds donated to the University of Chicago Medicine Lung Cancer Research.
