Explore contents, meaning, history of 2 ancient prayers used at Mass

Explore, understand and savor the meaning of the words, and ask questions about “The Creeds … This We Believe,” at a program about two ancient prayers recited at Mass that will be held 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23, in the Ministry Center of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville.

The Apostles’ Creed, so named because it once was popularly believed to have been written by the 12 apostles, is a summary of the Catholic faith expressed in a dozen statements. The Nicene Creed is a summary of truths of faith that emerged from the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) and the Council of Constantinople (381 A.D.). This Creed contains a fuller expression of Catholic doctrine, especially about the Trinity, than does the Apostles’ Creed.

Facilitating the discussion will be Chari Rosales, director of S.T.A.F.F.S. (St. Thomas Adult Faith Formation & Spirituality), an interesting speaker with a keen understanding and appreciation of her subject matter. Rosales, who enlivens her discussions with vivid clarity and intensity, has been active in church ministry for three decades, especially in the areas of religious history, liturgy and Scripture. She has studied at Loyola University Chicago, Dominican University in River Forest, and the Universite de Fribourg in Switzerland.

Among topics that Rosales will consider in the interactive program are the history of both prayers, how and why they were composed, and the development of the unchangeable doctrine contained in the Nicene Creed.

Sponsored by S.T.A.F.F.S., “The Creeds … This We Believe” is part of St. Thomas’ official observance of “The Year of Faith,” Oct. 11, 2012 – Nov. 24, 2013, as proclaimed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
