ASHES TO GO ~~ An Invitation to a Thoughtful Lent

Ash Wednesday, the first day of Christians’ holy season of  Lent, falls on March 5th this year. Lent is a time for recollection, reflection, and renewal. We recall Jesus’ life and death among us and reflect on the wrongs and slights we have committed, “those things done, and those things left undone.” And, we realize the renewing power of God’s steadfast love and ever-present forgiveness.

For centuries, Christians have observed Ash Wednesday by receiving a cross of ashes on thei foreheads. The mark recalls God’s indispensable role in the creation of the world and our own creation, “…from dust…to dust…”

Many people find it difficult to take part in a church-centered Ash Wednesday service.  Some people find that restrictive commuting schedules limit their presence at a traditional service,or it may be that they haven’t connected with a church community.

"ASHES TO GO" offers an opportunity to take part in the centuries-long tradition.

Between 6 – 9am, on Wednesday March 5th, members of the Episcopal Church of Saint Benedict will stand outside the church, offering a brief prayer and the imposition of Ashes. Saint Benedict is located at 909 Lily Cache Lane in Bolingbrook.

Those who find they are able may also attend one of the more typical Ash Wednesday liturgies inside the Church, at noon or at 7pm. More information is available from the Church office, 630-759-5955 or http://www.stbenedict.ws/
