Actress portrays five African-American Women

In honor of African-American History Month,
the Naperville Public Library will host a program showcasing five famous
African-American women from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at 95th Street Library, 3015
Cedar Glade Drive.

Through story and song, attendees will learn
about Phillis Wheatley, a well-known poet, Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and
women's rights activist, Harriet Tubman, a slave who led slaves to freedom
along the Underground Railroad, Gwendolyn Brooks, a recipient of the Pulitzer
Prize for poetry, as well as Crispus Attucks’ wife, whose story recounts how her husband died during
the Boston Massacre.

The program,
which is presented by Rose Productions, will showcase actress Cynthia Maddox who
will portray the women and transition between characters.
                                                                                                                    “These women's
stories are so inspiring and empowering,” Ed Dzialo, artistic director from Rose
Productions, said. “Most of them experienced extreme hardship and trials that
we can't even begin to imagine. Still, they were able to overcome and make
significant differences, not only in their own lives, but in others' lives as
well.”
