Naperville Animal Hospital Participates in Free Spay and Neutering Program for Pit Bulls

Pit bull owners can get vouchers for the free surgery, which is expected to reduce overpopulation of the breed as well as the number of pit bulls that end up in shelters, according to the Humane Society.

Throughout February, which is Spay and Neuter Month, the Humane Society will focus on the plight of pit bulls.

"We want to assist responsible pet owners in our community," said Jennifer Vlazny, HHS operations manager. "Spaying and neutering are paramount to helping resolve the pit bull overpopulation crisis and reducing the number of pit bulls we see in animal shelters in the future."

HHS is currently offering vouchers to pit bull owners to have their pets spayed or neutered for free. The vouchers will be distributed at the shelter, which is located at 22 N. Elm St. in Hinsdale, on a first-come, first-served basis. The shelter is open from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Participating veterinary clinics include Naperville Animal Hospital, 1023 E. Ogden Ave. Other participating facilities are:

  • Merrick Animal Hospital, Brookfield
  • Elmhurst Animal Care Center
  • Glen Ellyn Animal Hospital, Glen Ellyn
  • Wheaton Animal Hospital, Glen Ellyn
  • Hill-Chester Hospital for Animals, Hillside
  • Hinsdale Animal Hospital, Hinsdale
  • Green Paws Veterinary Clinic, LaGrange
  • Naperville Animal Hospital, Naperville
  • Alvi Animal Hospital, Summit
  • Summit Animal Hospital, Summit

Pet owners will be responsible for scheduling the appointment to have the surgery performed during February, March or April.

Pet owners also are encouraged to purchase Spay Day hearts for donation to the HHS Spay and Neuter Fund. Each heart purchased will help enable HHS to offer additional vouchers to pit bull owners.
