Electrical Problem Likely Caused Fire that Destroyed Huffman Street Home

After an investigation, Naperville Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard Sander said the fire was accidental and likely caused by an electrical issue.

Electrical issues most likely caused a fire that destroyed a home near downtown Naperville last month.

Naperville Fire Deputy Chief Richard Sander said he believes the fire started in the basement of the two-story home at 115 N. Huffman St. on April 29, but it was difficult to confirm because firefighters were unable to enter the home due to the size of the blaze.

After an investigation, Sander said the fire was accidental and likely caused by an electrical issue.

No one was home when the fire started around 12:10 a.m. April 29 according to the Naperville Fire Department. First arriving units reported a two story wood frame home fully involved in fire on all floors.

The first arriving crews brought nine vehicles to the scene. Once they arrived, they were informed by a neighbor that no one was home. An additional 14 vehicles were dispatched to the scene, according to the Naperville Fire Department.

Firefighters battled a "heavy volume of fire" on multiple floors of the home and were able to bring the fire under control at 12:35 a.m., according to the fire department.

No injuries were reported and crews remained on the scene for several hours looking for hot spots and assisting fire investigators, according to the fire department.

The home was deemed uninhabitable and estimated damage is more than $300,000.
