Construction to Impact Naperville Metra Parking

City to begin work on 5th Avenue near downtown Naperville Metra station next week.

Naperville Metra commuters may want to plan ahead beginning next week.

On Monday, June 17, the city of Naperville will begin construction on 5th Avenue near the downtown Metra station, which will effect 36 on-street daily fee commuter parking spaces between Columbia and Loomis Streets, according to the city.

Major work will include watermain installation in that area followed by pavement patching and curb and landscape restoration, with construction anticipated to last through September, according to the city.

Commuters will need to allow extra time for their travels and find alternative daily parking locations, including the daily fee spots now available in the DuPage Children’s Museum parking lot, according to the city.

Additional information, including advance notice of when spots will be unavailable as well as alternate parking locations, can be viewed at www.naperville.il.us/commuterparking.aspx.

Construction will take place on 5th Avenue from Columbia to Loomis streets, as well as Columbia Street from 5th Avenue north approximately 200 feet. The work is part of the water department’s long-term capital improvement plan to enhance the water distribution system’s performance and reliability in Naperville’s downtown area.

During the project, 5th Avenue from Columbia to Loomis will be open to one-way, westbound traffic only to allow for a safe work zone. Detours for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will be in place throughout the area, and motorists are encouraged to obey detour signs, use alternate routes and avoid this area if possible while construction is ongoing.

For nearby residences, there will be short periods of water service disruption while new water services are being connected. Residents will be notified in advance of the work. In addition, residents will have access to their driveways for the majority of the project, but may experience delays due to construction equipment in the roadway.

At brief times, residents may not be able to access their driveways due to certain construction activities. The city will attempt to minimize these inconveniences as much as possible. Motorists and residents in the area should expect heavy equipment, trucking, noise and dust through the project’s duration.

All construction is weather dependent; notice of schedule changes as well as more information will be posted to the project webpage at www.naperville.il.us/5thcolumbiawatermain.aspx.
