DuPage Children's Museum Named Top Tourist Attraction and Most Awesome Museum

DuPage Children’s Museum (DCM) was recently awarded with two distinct honors for their high attendance numbers and popularity among families within the Chicago region.

The Museum was named as one of the Largest Tourist Attractions in the Chicago area, according to a recent listing published by Crain’s Chicago Business. With over 330,000 visitors in 2012, DuPage Children’s Museum ranked No. 19 among other Chicago area tourist attractions. The Museum was also one of two attractions specifically in the Naperville community that was named to the listing, with Naperville Settlement ranked as No. 25.

Highlights of last year’s attendance included over 21,000 children who participated in DCM’s school programs, including Learning Labs and Field Trips; nearly 5,000 visitors who attended special programs and events, such as Tiny Great Performances®, DCM’s Annual Bubble Bash New Year’s Eve Celebration, and Family Math and Science Nights; and more than 4,000 adults and children who attended birthday parties and other event rentals in the Museum.

Leading Crain’s list of the largest tourist attractions is Navy Pier with more than 9.1 million visitors, Millennium Park with 4.5 million visitors, and Lincoln Park Zoo with 3.5 million visitors during 2012. The list combines tax-exempt cultural organizations and for-profit tourist attractions. All Crain’s lists and directories are available at ChicagoBusiness.com/lists.

DuPage Children’s Museum was also recently awarded the Red Tricycle 3rd Annual Totally Awesome Award in the Most Awesome Museum category.

In 2011, Red Tricycle launched an online reader-driven awards program, the Totally Awesome Awards, recognizing the best parenting brands, products, neighborhood services, and local resources for families with children 0-10 years old. Totally Awesome Awards were given in the New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, San Diego, Chicago, and Los Angeles markets.

In a count of nearly a quarter million votes, DuPage Children’s Museum prevailed over nine other exceptional museums in the Chicago region, including Chicago Children’s Museum, the Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn, DuSable Museum of African American History, KidsWork Children’s Museum, Kohl Children’s Museum, Museum of Science & Industry, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and The Field Museum.

“It is such an honor to be recognized by both of these organizations as a top resource and destination for families and tourists,” said Sue Broad, DCM President & CEO. “The Museum and our programs are carefully designed to foster early learning through the power of play, and we are grateful to be recognized for our success.”
