New Naperville Walmart Slated to Open Next Week

The opening day for Naperville's new 185,000-sqaure-foot Walmart Supercenter is fast approaching. 

The new store at 75th Street and Beebe Drive is set to open at 7:30 a.m. on March 12, according to a Walmart spokeswoman. The old and smaller Walmart, which opened in 1990, at 776 S. Route 59 will be shuttered. The old Walmart will remain open until the new store opens, the company said. 

The supercenter will be 69,000 square feet larger than the existing Naperville location and will also include a grocery store. It will be bordered by Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve to the south and east. The site was previously part of the forest preserve before it was zoned for commercial use.

Construction began in May 2013 on the 75th Street Walmart and workers have been busy in recent weeks stocking shelves, putting up signs and getting the interior ready to go for next week's opening, according to the spokeswoman. 

The new Walmart will be located on 75th Street just south of xSport Fitness. Under the terms of an agreement with the city, Walmart was required to obtain ownership of the property by April 30, 2013, with the to be store opened and operating by April 30, 2014.

Naperville City Council members voted unanimously in August to adopt a resolution giving Walmart a $1.75 million sales tax incentive over 10 years to relocate within the city.

City Council members said approving the resolution was necessary to keep Walmart in Naperville as the retailer had plans to move its new store to Aurora if the company did not receive the sales tax rebate.

The city has said that if the retailer moved to Aurora, Naperville would risk losing the sales tax revenue Walmart generates, which is about $500,000 a year.

In the past, similar tax rebates have been given to other large developments in Naperville such as the Naperville Marriott. The city has said the incentive helps “prime the pump” for tax revenue returns down the road.

While the majority of jobs have been filled by people moving from the existing Walmart to the new Walmart Supercenter, those interested in applying for positions can do so at a hiring kiosk in the existing store located at 776 S. Route 59.

Applications will be accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Interested applicants may also apply online at http://careers.walmart.com.  

The store will be hiring both full- and part-time associates According to store, according to manager Greg Szarzynski.

“We are excited to relocate the Naperville Walmart and bring good jobs with great career opportunities to the area while allowing us to better serve our customers,” he said.
