Naperville Group Helps Build New Home for Abandoned Eaglets

The Care of Trees, a Naperville-based organization, worked last week to build a new nest for the orphaned birds.

A Naperville organization recently got involved in helping a pair of abandoned eaglets find a new home.

A well-being check around 8 p.m. Thursday at Mooseheart in Batavia found a pair of eaglets dehydrated and they had lost weight, according to an email sent by Mooseheart's Leslie.

The brood's nest fell 85 feet to the ground during Memorial Day weekend's severe storms. Rescuers from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation in Barrington built a new nest and hoped to return the eaglets before the parents left the area.

However, Riemenschneider's email said the parents have not been seen and given the physical state of the eaglets, they will not be returned to the nest.

The parents watched nervously Tuesday as rescuers built a new nest with the assistance of workers from The Care of Trees in Naperville, according to Flint Creek founder Dawn Keller. Part of the old nest, which was completely destroyed on impact, was placed in the new one in hopes it would bring a familiar feel and smell.

The eagles have nested at Mooseheart for the last three years, and have been a popular attraction for area bird watchers. Two eaglets have been born each of the last two years.

Efforts to reach Flint Creek Wildlife have been unsuccessful.
