Kohl's has joined a growing list of retailers who have decided to open for early holiday sales, at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Macy's announced earlier this month that its retail stores also will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

The competition for retail dollars is heating up. The trend to open on Thanksgiving night actually began two years ago, when Toys 'R Us opened at 9 p.m., according to U.S.A. Today. Last year, Target, Sears, Kmart and Walmart opened at either 8 or 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving, according to the article.

Kohl's, based in Menomonee Fall, Wisc., will be open for 28 hours straight, from 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, through midnight Friday nationwide, according to a press release.

The nearest Kohl's locations are in the Fox Valley Mall at 4340 Fox Valley Center Dr. in Aurora and in Plainfield at 11860 S. Route 59 (at 119th Street); another nearby Kohl's is at Caton Farm Road and Route 59.

“Shopping over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has become a much-anticipated tradition enjoyed with friends and family,” said Kohl's Chief Customer Officer Michelle Gass in a prepared statement. “As many customers are eager to get a jump start on their shopping, we are opening our stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day as a convenience to our customers who want to make Kohl’s their first stop.”

Not everyone is happy about the trend, however. A Facebook page titled "Say No to Shopping on Thanksgiving" had more than 12,300 "likes" as of Monday, Oct. 21.
