City Explores Puppy Mill Ban for Naperville Pet Stores
More research is needed, councilors said Tuesday, before action can be taken on the proposed ban, according to the Chicago Tribune.
City officials in Naperville are expected to take a deeper look at puppy mills in coming months and the possibility of placing regulations on where pet stores can purchase their pups, according to media reports.
On Tuesday, several Naperville residents called on the city to ban the sale of dogs from puppy mills, saying the large-scale breeders keep the animals in bad conditions and often times the dogs will suffer from health conditions, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Naperville pet store owners also spoke up during Tuesday's city council meeting, stating they are careful to purchase puppies from breeders "who provide adequate environments" and are "regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture," according to the Daily Herald.
Other pet store owners follow the "humane model," which means they only sell pups that come from rescue organizations or animal shelter, according to the Daily Herald.
Do Naperville Pet Stores Buy from Puppy Mills?
In a recent Chicago Now post, blogger "Raining Cats and Dogs" spoke up on the supposed puppy mill issue in Naperville.The writer points to a new "Happiness is Pets" store that is being built in Naperville, stating the stores buys puppies from "Amish puppy mills, the worst of the bunch."
"Naperville is already home to three pet stores that are tapped into the puppy mill pipeline - the current Happiness is Pets, Petland and Furry Babies," according to the Chicago Now blog. "As more communities connect the dots and draw the line between puppy mills and pet stores, why oh why would Naperville give the green light for one of it's current stores to set up a new store."
