R&B group Ahmir performs at North Central College Jan. 27

Ahmir—billed as “YouTube’s No. 1 most popular R&B group”—will perform a benefit concert Jan. 27 at North Central College.

Proceeds from the concert will support the annual Football Fellowship of Christian Athletes Spring Break Service Project with Habitat for Humanity.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at The Union, 129 W. Benton Ave. in downtown Naperville. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door or purchased online; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

Since joining YouTube in 2008, Ahmir has amassed more than 56 million views on videos of its covers and original music and has nearly 350,000 subscribers to its channel. The group also recently signed a deal with the Robbins Entertainment record label distributed under RED/Sony Music.

“The Internet has allowed us to create music on our own terms and more importantly has allowed us to share it on our own terms,” says the group, which widely uses  Myspace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Members of the Cardinals football team regularly volunteer during spring break with Habitat for Humanity. Last March, seven members of the team traveled to Johns Island, S.C., a rural area near Charleston, to work with the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. One of the volunteers from last year’s trip, junior and tight end Austin Sadnick, played a large part in arranging this year’s benefit concert with Ahmir.

Each year, a number of North Central students participate in alternative spring break service trips across the United States. Last year, more than 60 students volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Center for Student Missions to destinations that included Tulsa, Okla., Mobile, Ala., Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. These trips, excluding the student-athlete service trips, are coordinated through North Central’s Office of Ministry and Service.

The Union hosts numerous performers throughout the year and is the College’s weekly venue for spiritually significant music, film and art.
