In Loving Memory: The Funeral for Democracy

This weekend, Occupy Naperville, DuPage Coffeehouse Move to Amend, and more than 60 organizations are teaming up in protest on the second anniversary of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling. Finding in favor of the notion that corporations are people and that money is free speech, the Citizens United v. FEC US Supreme Court decision allows corporations to secretly spend unlimited amounts of their US and foreign treasury to influence public elections.

Occupy Naperville and Move to Amend hope to send the message that viewing corporations as people will lead to the swift death of true democracy. In holding a mock funeral for, both organizations encourage the community to send the message that corporations are not people and that corporate money is not speech.

The mock funeral of democracy will start at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 21st. The march begins at the corner of Van Buren and Washington, in front of the downtown Naperville Bank of America branch. Participants should come dressed in funerary black with protest signs, funeral drums, and other related materials. The march will follow Occupy Naperville’s regular march and GA schedule.
