Guitarist Performance to Coincide with Guitar Exhibit at NCC

Critically acclaimed American classical guitarist Jason Vieaux performs Feb. 18 at North Central College.

Vieaux is touted as one of "the leading guitarists of his generation" by Absolute Sound magazine and one of the "stars of the guitar world" by the New York Times.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, in North Central College's Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $25 and $20; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit  northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

Vieaux, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., records for the Azica label and heads the Cleveland Institute of Music's Guitar Department. He'll join the faculty of the newly created guitar department at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2011.

In 1992, he became the youngest winner of the Guitar Foundation of America International Competition, then performed a 53-city recital tour of the United States and France.

Vieaux makes "the single guitar seem like a body of instruments at work … an orchestra of sound," raves the Philadelphia Inquirer. Each year, Vieaux plays more than 50 engagements worldwide. Recent concert highlights include recitals at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, two sold-out performances at the Dumbarton Oaks Concert Series in Washington, D.C. and a debut with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.

Vieaux is a frequent guest with orchestras across the United States and often works with renowned conductors. He has performed as concerto soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Florida Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Orchestra 2001, IRIS Chamber Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia. He has released 10 collections of recordings. Visit jasonvieaux.com to learn more.

The performance coincides with the opening of an exhibit featuring more than 60 Fender Stratocasters, Gibson Les Pauls and other classic guitars, many autographed by well-known rock stars. The exhibit featuring guitars from the collections of local residents Marguerite and Rich Waters and David Kelsch will be displayed Feb. 18 through April 10 in the College's Schoenherr Art Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The owners of the collections will greet visitors during an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

North Central College's 2010-2011 Sesquicentennial Fine & Performing Arts Season is supported by a generous grant from the Illinois Arts Council. USG Corporation and Navistar, Inc. are underwriting sponsors.

This performance is one of many ongoing programs at North Central College to enrich and broaden the cultural and academic outlook for the College and community. North Central offers a variety of venues accommodating a rich range of local and world-class events, performances and space needs for the public.
