Will County Forest Preserve Offers 'Canine College'

First class starts July 12. Courses offered in Joliet, Shorewood, Naperville, Homer Glen.

Help your dog learn some new tricks this summer and fall during the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s canine college.

Nine different courses will be offered at various times beginning on July 12 and ending Oct. 18 at four District dog parks. Classes range from basic training to agility fun runs.

Eight of the structured training sessions require pre-registration. Registration is not required for two free “Fido First Aid and Wellness” seminars, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, at Hammel Woods Dog Park in Shorewood and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, at Whalon Lake Dog Park in Naperville.

The remaining programs all charge fees ranging from $10 for seminars on problem behavior to $105 for six-session agility classes.

Classes also will be held at the Rock Run Dog Park in Joliet, which opens on July 19, and Messenger Marsh Dog Park in Homer Glen.

A current dog park permit is required in order to register for any of the classes, except for dogs under six months registering for “Puppy Basics” or “Dog Obedience Training.”

All dogs must be current on rabies vaccinations and DHLP (or titer tested). There is a limit of one dog per person and participants must be 18 years of age and older.
