Looking for a job can be a full-time job within itself. The hours that job seekers spend combing through job listings, vamping up their resumes and interviewing can be draining.
With all the labor of applying for a position, job seekers need to remember that networking and building contacts are some of the most important tools in the job search. Naperville Public Library would like to ease the job pursuit by offering a job search workshop, Networking for Job Seekers. The workshop, which will take place 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Community Room of Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave., will teach the basic skills of job search networking so job hunters can advance.
“This workshop is intended to help job seekers who are inexperienced with networking or slightly unsure or fearful of the process,” Kent Palmer, business librarian, said.“Attendees will learn basic steps of networking and how to follow those steps in various environments – face-to-face, on the phone and online.”
Palmer, who has worked as a job coach for several years, will present ways that attendees can make new contacts and build their network. He said the library is a great place to find resources to help those looking for a job.
“Several databases are available that guide a job seeker in the process of determining a career choice, preparing a resume and enhancing interview skills,” Palmer, said. “Several others assist a job seeker in finding potential employers and specific job openings.”
Palmer said the library also conducts about a dozen one-to-one appointments with job seekers every month. The one-hour sessions help the job seeker get acquainted with the library’s resources.
