Kids Give Back: Naperville Girl Scout Troop Delivers $200 In Peapod Groceries to Local Food Pantry

On May 12, Naperville Girl Scout Troop #51128 made a delivery of $200 worth of Peapod groceries to St. Thomas the Apostle Food Pantry as the culmination of their Kids Give Back curriculum, courtesy of Peapod.

Peapod’s educational curriculum is teaching more than 100 girls in the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana the ins and outs of shopping for healthy food choices on a budget and focuses on the importance of a nutritious diet.  A highlight of each class is an educational tour of a local food pantry, and a $200 food contribution – donated by Peapod and hand-selected by the scouts – to help hungry families in the area.  Deliveries are underway to eight different food pantries in Glen Ellyn, Des Plaines, Carol Stream, Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Naperville, Palatine, and Lowell, Ind.

The Kids Give Back program teaches children about how many people in this country – and in the local area – are without access to healthy food on a daily basis.  It also includes lessons on what people need in their diets, covering the basics about proteins, fats, sugar and more to give students a perspective on what to look for when they shop for food.  Armed with that information, the students go online to Peapod.com where they sort groceries by nutritional content and by cost, and place a food order funded by Peapod that benefits a local food bank.   Through the 11 troops, Peapod is donating $2,200 to food pantries in the region.  In addition, Peapod is donating $200 to each troop that completes the program to help fund supplies for scout activities.  In total, Peapod’s Kids Give Back donation is $4,400.
