During National Night Out, city officials are asking residents to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and celebrate the evening outdoors with their neighbors.

In 2011, more than 37 million people participated in National Night Out across the country, according to city officials.

The event is designed to generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and improve the relationship between the community and its residents.

Naperville police, firefighters and city officials are scheduled to visit neighborhoods during the evening. In the past, Naperville neighborhood events have included block parties, parades and more.
