Ann Romney & The American Mother: Mom Talk

Does the presidential hopeful's wife represent modern America?

It was pretty mild as far as political blunders go. After having read the entire transcript, I thought the statement was awkward, but not offensive. Of course, had I been Ann Romney, I may feel differently. Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen took a big swat at Ann Romney. Despite Ann's well-bankrolled lifestyle, she has five sons. So unless she had a battalion of nannies and staff, the woman must have worked very hard being a mom. There is no doubt that Rosen was wrong and stuck her foot in her mouth when she said Romney never worked a day in her life. The next sentences of Rosen's statement softened the blow. Rosen was making the point that Romney hasn't ever had an employer, she has never had to fight for wage equality, she has never had…

March Primary 2012: Voters Avoid the Polls

Blame it on the nice weather or voter apathy, but election officials said voter turnout was low for Tuesday's primary.

On the first day of Spring, some Naperville voters headed to the polls to cast their ballots in the March Primary, but according to local election judges the turnout was low. One election judge blamed the overly nice weather for the low turnout, along with voter apathy. At Community Christian Church, not even 10 percent of the ballots were claimed, said Technical Election Judge Kuldeep Sra. The location had a total of 1,710 ballots printed for the primary and as of 5 p.m. only 165 registered voters had cast a ballot, he said. While some polling places in DuPage County experienced problems with ballots not fitting in machines, Sra said there were no issues at his polling location “The good weather is working against us,” he said. “[Voters] …

The genesis of my comment was to push back against the Sentinel's original castigation that anyone that did not vote should be ashamed. His follow-up comment appeared (to me) to soften his original harsh position. There was no referendum in Tuesday's primary for my locality (otherwise I would have voted.) Primaries serve as a filter for vetting candidates prior to November elections. One is …   more ›

Kifowit Wins Nomination in 84th State House District

The Aurora alderman will face Republican Pat Fee in November, in a district with no incumbent.

Stephanie Kifowit, who for the last nine years has served as Aurora’s 3rd Ward alderman, secured the nomination in the 84th State House District Tuesday night. Unofficial totals show Kifowit with a more than 700-vote lead over her two opponents, attorney Carole Cheney and flight attendant Alex Arroyo. Cheney and Arroyo ended the race essentially tied, with only 10 votes separating them. Kifowit held a victory party at O’Malley’s Bar and Grill in Aurora. Surrounded by supporters, she credited the hard work of her campaign.  “Walking door to door and talking to voters is the way to do it,” she said. Kifowit was heavily supported by state Democrats, a fact that drew criticism from her opponents. But she said it was the ground-level effort of …

Barrington Hills resident Leslie Coolidge has won the Democratic nomination to compete against Republican incumbent Peter Roskam for the 6th Congressional district seat. Roskam has held the 6th U.S. Congressional District seat since 2007 and has raised $1.8 million so far. “We’re going to go at it from a grassroots perspective and the …

Foster Handily Wins 11th District Nomination

The former congressman will face Rep. Judy Biggert in November for the right to represent the newly-drawn 11th District.

Congrats Mr. Noonan. I know the more people get to know you will understand that what you stand for is the best possible thing for Dupage. The voters and the people you serve will be greatly impressed by your dedication and your deep interest in the issues at hand.   more ›

Electrical Aggregation Measure Fails in Will County

By a 8,707-5,928 vote, residents of unincorporated Will County shot down a measure that would have let the county shop on their behalf for better power prices.

By a 8,707-5,928 vote, Will County voters shot down a measure that would have let the county shop around on their behalf for better electricity prices. The electrical aggregation measure could have meant cheaper power bills for small businesses in unincorporated Will County and the nearly 105,000 residents. Similar referenda in Mokena, Frankfort and other towns passed. "From the very beginning the choice was up to the voters," Will County board spokesman Nate Brown said Tuesday night. "We respect their decision for the board to work on other issues besides electrical aggregation. The board will continue to look for other ways to put money back in the pockets of Will County residents." Earlier this month, Brown said the next steps would …

It includes the major cities of Aurora, Naperville and Joliet, and spans from Aurora in the west to Burr Ridge in the east, and as far south as Channahon. Three Democrats are vying for the nomination: former 14th District Congressman Bill Foster, Orland Fire Protection District President Jim Hickey, and attorney Juan Thomas.
