As a mommy-to-be or new mommy, you undoubtedly know that these are crucial times to take the utmost care of your physical, mental, and emotional well being. There are many factors to consider when choosing an approach to wellness and you want to make sure to get the most bang for your buck, time, and energy!
So what do I recommend? Pilates! It offers the best of all worlds. At first glance you might assume Pilates might only serve to keep you/get you back in shape, but it goes way beyond that. While it will work wonders on your body (see next paragraph), Pilates isn’t just any old fitness method; Pilates is a mind body fitness method. The connection between your mind, body, and breath is key; forcing you to focus, relax, and be present. Needless to say, these are all elements of a a positive mental and emotional state. With all that must be racing through your head (say, like: baby names, stroller brands, and doctor appointments) let your time on the mat or equipment be your think-free zone but only to focus on the present moment.
In addition to all of the above, Pilates will work wonders on your body! It is highly modifiable for your growing belly and perfect for your prenatal & postnatal body given its emphasis on the core. The core area (ahem, your “abs”) is one of trickiest areas for most women and every movement within Pilates revolves around the reliance on and building of core strength. In everyday life this strength is super important, but when prepping your body for childbirth or recovering strength to your abdominal muscles after giving birth your core simply has to be strong. Of course in addition to building your core strength, a regular Pilates practice will elongate muscles, increase strength and flexibility, and improve endurance.
