5 Quick Ways to Add Strength to Your Home Entry Doors

Hello Naperville Patch Readers -

I started blogging on the Elmhurst Patch site about tips in regards to home security as with warmer weather, Home Burglary attempts often increase.  I thought it might be helpful to share these tips with different towns/communities.

Today is specifically around Entry Doors on homes.

Here are a few things to think about when evaluating your entry doors.

  1. Entry doors should always be a solid core or metal.
  2. Hinges should NEVER be on the outside of the door.
  3. The "throw" of the deadbolt (a.k.a the latch) should be at least 1 inch in length.
  4. Always use a heavy duty, good quality deadbolt.
  5. Use at least four heavy duty, 3-inch-long wood screws to secure the strike plate to the wooden door frame.

The quickest and easiest to take care of yourself is #5. Almost always, the forced entry point of a door is the door jamb, where the strike is. Reinfocing it with 3-inch-long wood screws will make it more difficult to kick in and more likely to take a beating.

Just some food for thought. Thank You for reading and remember, share with a friend.

If you live in a high risk area, pack heat (except Illinois).

It's a shame that in The People's Republic of Illinois, security advice consists of women vomiting on themselves to prevent rape and front door strengthening. Our neighbors in EVERY other state have the freedom to carry a defensive handgun.

It is completely legal to have a gun in your house in Illinois for defense.

In times past one could reasonably expect to be "robbed" and left alive afterwards. Today the scene is very different...they will rape you or steal from you, or both, and then KILL you becuse they have no value of life or decency or simply fair play. So, you must presume that the person kicking your front door in will *very likely* kill or rape. Knowledge of safe handling, storage and use of a firearm is a great insurance policy for these times. Wait till they knock the door down...shoot when they cross the treshold...drag the SOB outside so you have less to clean up...dail 911
