VIDEO: Girl Scouts Bring Comfort to Puppies in Need

With the help of some spare pine cones and a little ingenuity, local Girl Scout Daisy Troop 51695 helped provide comfort and warmth to four-legged friends in need on Friday.

During the holidays, the Prairie Elementary School first grade troop was able to raise $150 by selling homemade elves and angels made out of pine cones. On Friday, the troop presented the money to Naperville's Dog Patch Pet & Feed, which will be donated to A Place to Bark, a Tennessee-based animal foster facility.

"I had lots of pine cones from my mom," troop leader Christina Lupo said in a letter. "I went on Pinterest and looked at pine cone ideas and saw the ideas for the pine cone elf and angel there." 

Serving Naperville for more than 40 years, Dog Patch works closely with organizations like A Place to Bark as well as other foster facilities to provide new homes for animals. The troop's trip to Dog Patch on Friday coincided with one of their outings. 

Tails wagged and smiles grew wide when the girls helped two chocolate Labrador Retrievers burn off some energy by playing with them during the scouts tour of the store. The puppies, Farley and Fennway, were recently brought in to Dog Patch from A Place to Bark. 

The puppies and their new roommates at Dog Patch also have comfy new beds to lay on thanks to the troop. With extra money, the girl scouts made around 14 fleece knot blankets to donate to Dog Patch. 

"That's what being a girl scout is all about," Lupo said. "Caring for someone other than ourselves."
