Tell Us What Makes a Good Neighbor for National Good Neighbor Day?

National Good Neighbor Day is Sept. 28. Share your stories about the neighbors who make Naperville a great place to live.

A good neighbor comes in many forms.

It may be someone who keeps an eye on your kids when they’re playing outside or someone who pet sits for you when your family is on vacation. Some even go above and beyond to make your community a great place to live by picking up trash in neighborhood parks or volunteering to start youth programs at the local library.

The concept of National Good Neighbor Day began in the early 1970’s when Montana resident Becky Mattson pushed to create a holiday that would recognize people who make their neighborhoods a great place to live.

The annual event became a National Holiday in 2003 when Senator Max Baucus sponsored a U. S. resolution naming Sept. 28 National Good Neighbor Day.

Are there people in your community who exemplify being a good neighbor? Today is a good time to tell them that you—and the entire neighborhood—appreciate all they do.

Wish I had a good neighbor. Instead I have one that complains about my kids playing in the front yard, they don't know how to trim their trees or take care of any of their overgrown plants. All they do is complain.

Here in High Meadow we have great neighbors up and down the street and even behind us! Lots of young kids playing in each of our yards, with parents taking turns watching out and administering water and hugs when needed.

That is great. On the other side of our subdivision the neighbors are all wonderful. You have kids playing throughout the whole neighborhood. We are saving up to move to that side as it has gotten to the point where our kids are not comfortable anymore when they know the neighbors are home. Horrible huh? Especially in our own home that we worked hard to get.

I have wonderful neighbors. I have cancer and try to make the nmost of each day by sitting outside, feeling the sun and smelling the fresh air. More often than not, a neighbor will walk over and spend a few minutes to a few hours talking to me. If I'm alone for an evening, some ask if I'd like to go out to dinner with them. There's a little boy who lives next door who, every time he sees I'm outside, shouts my name and comes right over, gives me a hug and we talk for a while. He's a bright spot in my day. I guess I'm very lucky...there is absolutely NOTHING for me to complain about and absolutely EVERYTHING I can say that's nice about my neighbors. They care.

Thanks "Mom". I wasn't going to bring up the cancer but it was kind of hard to describe the "why" I sit outside so much. I have maybe 2-3 years and, without being maudlin, neighbors like the ones I have DO make a difference not only to me but to each other. They really are true friends who make each day brighter. Like I said, I am very lucky. Emjoy this beaufitful weather and, maybe, take a few moments to sit outside and just sock up these autumn days.
