Shriya Shah: Making Hospital Visits Easier for Patients, Visitors

Shriya Shah was honored with a Youth Service Award for her volunteer work at Edward Hospital

Shriya Sha began volunteering at Edward Hospital in July 2008. Every Friday, she would volunteer and help at the information desk, escorting visitors, delivering flowers to patients, answering the phone, and assisting the concierge staff.

Shriya was one of several teens to be honored with a Youth Service Award. She was nominated to receive the honor by Pamela Briggs, supervisor of volunteer services.

Every year, KidsMatter together with Mayor Pradel and the Naperville City Council, give out the Naperville Youth Service Awards to deserving teen volunteers during a special ceremony.

Briggs said Shriya handles her position beautifully at the hospital; she is kind and courteous to everyone who comes into the hospital. She has a wonderful rapport with the patients, visitors, and staff. Shriya has also helped in the surgery waiting room, assisting families of surgical patients, and in the hospital lab.

“Shriya is one of Edward’s most responsible and dependable student volunteers; they can – and do! – count on her to be there every week,” Briggs said.

Students have homework, sports, clubs, and part-time jobs competing for their time, and their commitment to volunteering often suffers. However, Shriya has an excellent attendance record.

She donated more than 300 hours of service. She always comes in with a smile and a willingness to help. Shriya also has strong leadership skills, and has been asked to help in training new student volunteers. New volunteers can trust that Shriya will welcome them and make them feel a part of our team.

The Student Volunteer Program at Edward Hospital is large and diverse, consisting of 250 high school students. Shriya’s wonderful attitude, dependability, and dedication set her apart from the crowd. She is an outstanding representative of Edward’s program, and is very deserving of this honor.
