UPDATE: Hacker Takes Down GoDaddy.com Websites, Impacts Some in Naperville

Domains owned by some Naperville residents impacted by the hack.

Trying to connect to a website today and having problems? It's possible the site you're trying to access was taken down by a hacker earlier today.

The Web hosting company GoDaddy.com took a big hit today from a hacker identifying himself on Twitter as @AnonymousOwn3r. In a tweet the hacker said he wanted to challenge the company's online security and also claimed other reasons he could not disclose. According to @AnonymousOwn3r's Twitter profile he calls himself the "security leader of Anonymous" and an "Anonymous official member." @AnonymousOwn3r indicated the attack on GoDaddy was him alone and not being carried out by the whole of Anonymous' hacker community.

GoDaddy tweeted they are aware of the problem and are working on resolving the issue.

Naperville resident Jacke Zahn, who owns the site www.iwanttoelearn.com, said before learning of the hack, she spent some time trying to troubleshoot her site when it would not load earlier today.

"I spent 15 minutes troubleshooting from here until it occurred to me to jump on Twitter and look up 'GoDaddy'," she said on Facebook.

Zahn's site has been restored, but many sites (including my personal site) remain down. Zahn said her email, whish is routed through GoDaddy is still down.

Jean Allen Kuhn reported on Facebook her three websites, Http://bounce-solutions.com
Http://lagrangechocolates.com and Http://orlandparkchocolates.com, were also down most of the day.

We will update with more information as we receive it.

GoDaddy hosts over 45 million domain names.

UPDATE: More sites seem to have been restored. GoDaddy tweeted "more progress has been made. We're still investigating and working, though."

UPDATE: GoDaddy reported on its main page that most customer sites are back online. They said no customer data, such as credit card numbers, passwords or addresses were compromised. More information will be available over the next 24 hours, they said.

Lately, it seems like there have been a number of high profile outages. Whether it is the numerous outages at Amazon AWS, Google Apps, or this recent GoDaddy outage – one trend is that these are all very large infrastructures. With size comes attention. And with that attention, one must be vigilant.

Here is another interesting blog on this outage:

Hope you'll find it full of interesting information.

Check the last council meeting where they authorized another 100k for yet another consultant to correct another problem with their software. This on top of the extra tropoes, hidding costs in other funds the bond interest costs, total lack of any payback etc. By the time they get done with the recalls, breakdowns, etc we will be lucky if it doesn't cost us 40 million!

There you go AGAIN Gerard.
I just checked the city's website and at the last meeting there was no 100k spent on a smart grid consultant for software. If you think there was please provide the date of the meeting and the agenda item. Otherwise it's time for you to get into the whhaaaaabulance and go see a doctor about your cronic crying, lying and whining!!

Costs for hiring an information technology consultant for this initiative are estimated to be less
than $100,000. Although the project is not budgeted, it is expected that the cost will be funded
through the expected revenue surplus for FY 13. The completion of the strategic initiative will
be later than planned: with the new approach it is expected that the strategic technology plan will
not be completed until the second quarter of FY 14.
RECOMMENDATION:
Please distribute this memorandum to the City Council through the Manager’s Memorandum

Gerard, here's the proof that facts mean nothing to you and your fellow SMAG luddites. The document you are SELECTIVELY QUOTING can be found on page 11 here. http://www.naperville.il.us/emplibrary/Boards_and_Commissions/mm20120907.pdf

Nothing to do with smart meters but you try and make it sound so. Council did not see this at a meeting but you say they did. Facts are tricky things arn't they Gerard? Time for the SMAG group to move on to the next mistruth.

Really, making it up? Ever hear of Stuxnet? Watch the first 30 seconds of the Sixty Minutes piece regarding our smart grid infrastructure, how vulnerable it is, and the definite staement of WHEN NOT IF it will be brought down by cyber terrorists.

Hey Jo,
Ummm, I was clearly talking about Gerards made-up number of 30 Million. In true SMAG fashion you move off topic once the group gets called out for it's bogus info that it pushes. SMAG gets called out on one lie they just move on to the next!

Gerard, you apparently are having another "Emily Littela" moment. The consultant being retained, if you read the Manager's Memo carefully, is charged with creating a "Strategic Technology Plan" for the City. That has nothing to do with correcting any supposed software problems with the Smart Grid System. All large organizations, like the City, need to have a Technology Plan so they can make the best use of technology to reduce costs and improve efficiencies and customer experience for all departments. How that got twisted into something to do with Smart Grid software is rather curious.
Oh, and Gerard... Your old analog electric meter isn't UL certified either... imagine that... but of course you already knew that, didn't you.

Hi Bob,
So nice to hear from you, thought like Hale whose quote, “I only regret I have but one life to give….” that you come over to the other side and realized the error of your ways due to the messiah like belief in government knows best and smart meters being your and society’s salvation! Like Obama’s hope and change, meters and readers do nothing to make electricity more abundant and cheaper.
By the way the excuse of always hiring consultants in a little lame by now and if you cut through the BS the consultant is being hired to resolve the billing fiasco caused by the new improved software to screw the rate payer. If we need to hire a consultant to write a IS strategic plan then we need to fire the various IS managers we currently have!!
You never told us weather you bought an extra fire extinguisher because of the fire hazard smart meters pose due to their plastic and combustible products composition as opposed to the analogue’s which are glass, steel and aluminum?

WN for a guy who keeps calling people like me names for the record let me say I am many things but a whining, crying, lying megalomaniac is not one of them. On the other hand if you would take your head out of your annual cavity and breath some fresh air for a change you might wake up to what is going on around you?

Somehow, I doubt it but keep up the abuse as I will be more than willing to trade you insult for insult. Have a great day you moron!

Gerard,
So I follow up with what you say, prove it isn't true, and you resort to the position of crying, whining and namecalling. Your last post proves that you will cry, whine, name call and otherwise act like a four year old when the adults in the room correct your childish behavior.

The "abuse" as you call it will contininue as long as you contine to lie in order to make your made-up points.

WN,
Adults take responsibility for their actions, use healthy skepticism when their government raise their taxes, object when these things are scams and always, always question what is being done by the elite few for the benefit of the ignorant masses like me. If you wish to characterize it as you do be my guest. I am done wasting my time on your nonsense!

City management can best be described as inept, more accurately as arrogant, wasteful and vindictive. Remember that when Krieger was sworn in , CNN Money rated Naperville as #3. It has now plummeted to 53rd place. Any more taxpayer funded boondoggles in the pipeline?

HOME FIRE HAZARD MANDATED BY OUR CITY COUNCIL!
At Naperville’s 9/18/2012 City Council’s Open Forum (on their video from minutes 20:40 to 58) a number of residents and members of the Naperville Smart Meter Awareness group discussed in great detail the FIRE Hazards posed by smart meters.

To view this informative session and council’s responses open this link. http://naperville.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=542

Bottom line is ComEd and other city’s electric companies have put on hold installation of these devices which are not UL or CSA certified until their state’s PUC get answers to fires which have been attributed to (directly or indirectly) these meters. Our city council and manger dismissively disregard any concern and councilman Wehrli was outright hostile to any suggestion to go slow and some would say badgered the speakers.

It’s bad enough that our electric rates, water rates, gas cost, city fees and taxes keep rising at unjustifiable rates now we have to accept against our will on OUR HOMES a device which may literally kill us!

Not one local paper covered this significant potential threat to all of us and they should start reporting objectively on this subject instead of just being shills for the city!

Or maybe the press in the area is just tired of your group of luddites, Gerard. Did you ever stop and think that maybe the press has joined the rest of Naperville in thinking that the SMAG will say and do anything to get the attention they so crave? Your group is now, rightfully so, seen as a group of children who will whine and cry to get people to pay attention to them... just like your TEA party Gerard!
