City Extends Deadline for Smart Grid Video Contest

Entries for the contest will be accepted through Oct. 15.

The city of Naperville has extended the deadline for the video contest to highlight and promote the benefits of the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative (NSGI). Entries are now being accepted through Monday, October 15, 2012.

Videos received will help the city educate utility customers about the NSGI, which gives customers more choices and options in how they manage their energy use. Entrants will focus on one or all of the 4Es of the NSGI: Energy, Environment, Education and Economy. These four key areas summarize the lasting, positive effects of the NSGI:

  • Energy: The NSGI allows customers to make smarter, more efficient choices about how they use energy.
  • Environment: The NSGI is paving the way for a cleaner environment and the electric vehicle.
  • Education: The NSGI provides more choices and options for customers in how they manage their energy. The NSGI will give Naperville-area students at all levels a practical tool to learn about energy consumption and conservation and gain firsthand experience on emerging technologies and future careers.
  • Economy: The City’s municipal utility already attracts businesses with its low rates and reliable service. The NSGI provides customers with tools to potentially save money, and the project is spurring job creation locally as well as nationally, helping grow our local economy.

People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to submit a 30-second video that addresses one of the 4Es. Entrants may complete up to four videos, each up to 30 seconds in length, which address the 4Es separately. One video per category will be accepted from each entrant. Entries may be submitted digitally in .wmv, .mov, .avi, .mpg and .flv formats at ftp.naperville.il.us/public/NSGI. Videos may also be submitted in DVD format via mail or in person to Nadja Lalvani, Community Relations Manager, Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., Naperville, IL 60540.

All entries are due by Monday, October 15, 2012, at 5 p.m. After that time, members of the public will be invited to view and vote for their favorite videos atwww.naperville.il.us/smartgrid.aspx. Mayor A. George Pradel and City Council members will select a winning video in each category from the top five videos in each group that receive the most online votes. Winners will be publicly recognized at a future City Council meeting.

Submitted by the city of Naperville.

Wow! A contest? Seriously? Let's make this whole thing sound like it's a 'fun thing for the residents' when really there is much debate over the health consequences of these "Smart Meters"..including CANCER. I guess some of the 12 million that Naperville is getting from the government will go towards prizes for the winner. Nice.

You are surrounded by cellphone towers, tv and radio transmitters, microwave systems, wifi routers, electronic devices like TVs, stereos, and computers, etc..

You are routinely bathed in FAR more radio frequency waves from them than you will ever get from smart meters.

Your only hope is to move to Antarctica and even then you'll still receive some RF.

"I guess some of the 12 million that Naperville is getting from the government will go towards prizes for the winner. "

It appears that a fair amount of your opposition to the Smart Grid is based on unfounded supposition.

"The contest winners will be recognized at a future City Council meeting where they will receive a certificate of recognition."

Are you REALLY that worried about the cost of a certificate of recognition?

Is this contest open only to Naperville residents, or would a Wheaton resident be able to enter?

Reading the information from the city I don't see any restrictions. You could always contact the city and ask.

Jasper,
I think what Jim Smith was trying to say, was Yes, a Wheaton resident would be able to enter.

I was trying to say:

"Look it up - you'll need to know more if you do apply, so you might as well go directly to the source: http://bit.ly/yArC61 "

;)

1) How do you know that the person to whom you addressed that is a city official or employee?

2) What is your take on residents of Naperville engaging in personal attacks against their neighbors who happen to have been elected to city positions or who work for the city?

Thank you, Mr. Ambassador. You're correct. What I don't understand, and will never understand, is that we residents of towns, specifically Naperville for this purpose, elect and pay for these positions to be held by these 'attackers'. How is this fair? Is it time for an uprising and denial of payment our city taxes to get their attention? It's a disgrace and a disappointment to the community. 12 million dollars is given, we have a 3rd high school that HAD to be built, yet enrollment is down and we are not able to pay our teachers; thus, the economic crisis hits them, they are fired, and the students suffer. YET....we still have an increase in taxes, we accept money that could be spent elsewhere. Big brother and greed has fueled this Smart Meter issue. The mayor and all his cronies are greedy and are puppets of the future governmental control of our lives. They have their fingers in every part of our lives. Socialism is on its way people. It's time to wake up. This Smart Meter issue is a continuance of that.

Possibly you are unaware that the city government which is responsible for the smart grid plan is a completely separate entity from school districts 203 and 204.

We have a citizen government here in Naperville. The mayor and council are not the big evil you claim they are. They are your neighbors and they care a lot about the community.

Histrionics will not win you many converts.

Jim Smith,
How much do you stand to make off this deal? Your patronizing attitude is concerning.

HappyJoy, where do you get off accusing me of profiting directly from this venture? I'm a Naperville resident who has no link to the city government and who has nothing to do with the smart grid.

Do you resort to ad hominem attacks because your position is weak and you know it's going to fail?

No, I do not, Jim. I am well aware that the school board is separate from the city government. My point is that Naperville government in its entirety has shown from the past county and school district symposium/meetings, also known as 'let's patronize our fellow community members and treat them like they're 2 nights" have blatantly (on NCTV) represented a group of bullys. It's as if this has to be a qualification to represent our great city.

Now you're lumping the two Naperville school districts, Will and DuPage county governments, and the city government into one big bullying conspiracy.

Jim,
In reference to my earlier comment on Socialism and Big Brother watching us.....this excerpt is quoted from an article written by Kris sangani in Consumer Tech; July, 2010
....."Thus smart meter deployment is at various stages in Europe and the rest of the developed world as a result of environmental concerns. However, privacy issues have already halted plans to deploy smart meters en masse in the Netherlands. The Dutch feared that data on energy consumption could be misused by criminals, police or insurance companies and, because of a consumer backlash championed by consumer advocacy groups, Holland has curtailed the compulsory introduction
of the meters. Dutch consumer and privacy organisations were concerned
that information relayed as frequently as every 15 minutes could allow employees of utility companies to see when properties were empty or when householders
had bought expensive new gadgets and how and when they were used."

Happy Joy,
Once again you guys are spreading "mis-information". Your quote is from mid 2010, in 2011 the Dutch Congress passed amended legislation that gave the green light to continued deployment of smart meters.
