What a top heavy organization. Why are we supporting 3 golf courses with pros and a golf director. Fire all of them and sell the golf courses. Why should majority of tax payers have to support these people?

Naperville is an affluent exurb. These are the things affluent exurbs pay for. Feel free to hop in the car and drive west or south for an hour and move to some one-horse town. ... Sounds like you'd like to cut all Parks & Rec so in 2-5 years you can sit around and complain how terrible Naperville is ...

What an eye opener. And this is JUSt the Park District. Wonder what the city corporate employees make. And take a gander at some of the bumps from 2011 to 2012, especially the exec director.
And this is during a time when many many employees who work for companies don't even get a cost of living increaase and haven't had one for years.
Cripes, this reminds me of Chicago.

Keep the hard working park district employees. Fire the writer and editor of this article for spelling "District" wrong in the title.

Vera, you're uttering nonsense, as usual. Police and Fire are necessary and benefit all of Naperville residents. Park District stuff like golf courses are NOT necessary and are NOT used by all Naperville residents. And as some here have said, the Park District seems to be top heavy and bloated. How many "directors" does a town our size NEED for a park districct. I pay MY taxes too and it's articles liek this that show us where our money is going...and this amount of money could be better spent elsewhere. I'm also not saying we need to close the golf courses or even sell them. But I bet they can be operated at much less expense than they are now.

Vera, if you were "making a point", sorry but you were wide of the mark. If you are going to make a point, it's always smart to make it with facts that make sense. And for the most part, people in Naperville don't complain very much about police and fire pensions and pay...unless they are way out of whack.
Be that as it may, people here have said the park workers on the list are "professionals" meaning they have either worked their way up the ladder, learning as they go, OR have gone to school and got a degree in, say, land management. But I bet if you went into the backgrounds and schooling of many on the list, you'll find most aren't "professionals" but merely landed in the job. I still think a park district, no matter where it's located, often winds up to be bloated and top heavy and can be trimmed.

Sentinel facts? Do you live in Naperville? If so , people have complained about salaries and pensions of Police and Fire! Do you recall when Naperville had to lay off several Police Officers because of no money in the budget and people said money can be saved by cutting the Police high salaries! Luckily those Officers were hired back! Did you go to the Council metting when they did the lay off's? I did! Also Police and Fire are extreme professionals in their field of work, just like any other profession .

These are professionals with many years of experience. I'm surprised that they get paid so little, frankly. You would be hard pressed to find a business with as large a budget and as many employees as the park district with a CEO getting paid so little. If you think the park district should not have Golf courses, that is your right, but complaining that a skilled, experienced professional makes $90k per year?? That's just silly.

I don’t think anyone is complaining that these people’s skillset aren’t worth their salary, but more about why we even need the position(s). It’s not a reflection of the individual earning the salary, but the person who increases the budget each year to hire more bodies that force us to pay the salaries.

$169,457.46 is an insane amount of money to be paying for an executive director. His latest salary increase represents a 20% increase ( $28,159.00) in one year. It is time to revisit the number of employees in the park district and to downsize salaries and expenses. In these tough economic times it is not reasonable or prudent to be giving these outrageous salary increases. Wake up Naperville.

Everybody DID see the part where is said "Total compensation includes salary, insurance, pension payments and additional financial allowances", right? That's not just their base salary. Just to keep the freak-out in context here.

That said, there does seem to be quite a bit of bloat. I agree that we're spending an awful lot of money on golf and golf pros. I mean, golf is nice and all, but not at the taxpayers' expense.

Dan O.

11:06 am on Monday, October 29, 2012

Obviously none of you have played golf in Naperville. It's $66 to play 18 holes with a cart on a Saturday. That's $264 PER foursome and it's impossible to get a tee time it's so crowded. Do you really think the tax payers are getting hit for the golf pro's salary?

Reply

Gerard Schilling

11:07 am on Monday, October 29, 2012

Why do we own golf courses? Some tax payers like movies and to eat out. Should Naperville buy a restaurant and movie theater and staff it with professional at 100k each and tax the rest of us for it?

The problem with all government politicians and bureaucrats is they are forever expanding their base, salaries and power to place their cronies and buddies in what should be private businesses.

What you don’t see in this article is how much these courses are losing each year and how much the tax payer has to subsidize them.

If these were private courses two of them would be bankrupt, closed and sold with appropriate curtailment of staff and salary cuts for the remaining people. Instead they give themselves raises at our expense! Time to clean house and cut government by selling them off!

Why do we own golf courses? BECAUS WE CAN!
If there was ever a binding referendum to sell the golf courses Naperville owns, you bet they'd be for sale! Considering the small population of Naperville residents who golf and the number of golfers who wouldn't turn out to vote, it's all but a sure thing.

Gerald... be careful about what you suggest. Lisle Park District owns a restaurant and it's on their golf course.

Your right there are only two. Why do we have 3 pros? In any case it is not the responsibility of government to provide for your or anyone else’s golf outings. This is why we are going bankrupt because of these cradle to grave all-encompassing nanny state projects.

Nothing government does when it comes to running businesses is efficient or effective and they/we never learn. Free market capitalism is the only proven way to run businesses. Sell the courses and if possible the beach too.

Running for it? Hack I subscribe to eliminating it as it is just one more taxing authority which is and has been out of control for years. No control, no oversight and no justification for their existence.

All their functions could easily be absorbed by current city employees and their expenditures approved by city council. Lets get rid of them too.

sip I would say no more than 75,000 now! Easy math! 20 years after retirement at roughy 115,000 a year as a Captain in 2005. 20x2.5 a year = 50%, 115,000@50% =57,500. Then take 3% cost of living a year for 8 years comes to roughly 72,839.00 not 100,000.00

If you have a problem with the salaries (which includes their total compensation....health insurance alone can cost $14,000 for a family of four) then I suggest you attend a board meeting or contact their Director or Finance person so they can explain to you where your tax payer dollars are going. It helps to be educated and get the all the details to prevent yourself from getting all riled up. I know that the park disrict staff has gone with out raises in the past (I can't remember which years) and who know what attributed to the Director's raise....maybe his insurance premiums went up. We don't know so we should ask if that is what interests us.

Also, the park disrict and its golf courses add to the value of living in Naperville even if you don't use it. When you go to sell your home, the prospective buyers will see the golf courses, the beach, and the parks as a bonus to living in Naperville.

The taxes in Naperville are one of the lowest in the surrounding suburbs. We couldn't afford to buy a house in Downers Grove or Wheaton because the price of homes were too high and the taxes were too high. And we were moving from Sugar Grove where the taxes were way higher! Property taxes are expensive in any Chicago suburb but Naperville's are lower than most of those suburbs. Check it.

One of the many, many things that drives me crazy about the ultra-conservatives & Teabaggers is they beatify the Founding Fathers & Constitution to the point that they ignore (or are ignorant of) the fact that when some of their beloved framers (Hamilton & Washington, for example) became actual politicians and administrators in the 1790s and early 1800s, they were very much in FAVOR of some of these types of "nuisance taxes" that our Mr. Schilling is railing against today.

You should do so well as to emulate not only the morality and integrity of these great men but in many cases their intelligence, knowledge, patriotism and understanding of service to their country and communities without pay since they saw it as a duty.

They knew what would happen when corrupt politicians steal (unnecessary taxes) from the citizens to reward cronies and political hacks and wrote into OUR CONSTITUTION preventative measures like the Bill of Rights.

Since its’ inception the crooks, liars, cheats and bums have been trying to eliminate it and in the process are destroying this country. Freedom is lost one step at a time and there is precious little left.
